Opened in 1975, the German Maritime Museum - Leibniz Institute for German Maritime History is the largest of its kind in Germany. The main theme of the research museum is the eventful and momentous relationship between man and the sea using the example of maritime technologies with a focus on ships. How do people use the sea - yesterday and today? And how do we want to live tomorrow?
The research and exhibition program focuses on the use of ships in the context of the maritime economy, research shipping or against the background of changing environmental behaviour. Whatever belongs to these topics can be found here: from ship models, signal weapons and nautical charts to testimonies, pictures and much more. The objects and sources form the starting point for a historical perspective on the invention, use, research and reflection of maritime technologies.
The DSM's thematic focus, which includes a global historical perspective, gives it a unique selling point both nationally and internationally. As part of its cooperative research and exhibition approach, the DSM combines its own research with two scientific focal points that are also important for the state of Bremen: the marine and social sciences. The latest findings in these fields will be presented in its new exhibition, which will be gradually implemented in three stages from winter 2016/17. Due to its location between the Wese estuary and the city's oldest port area, the historical perspective of the DSM is embedded in Bremerhaven's lively maritime everyday culture, which is characterized by shipping.

Experience the history of seafaring at the Pingelturm. The popular sight originally served as a lighthouse for navigating ships. Its special location at the mouth of the Geeste was an important landmark for ship captains. Today, the Pingelturm no longer serves as a lighthouse - the viewing platform, with its wonderful view over the harbor, is a popular place for numerous tourists.

The Bürgerpark in the middle of Bremerhaven, just a few minutes' walk from the main railway station, offers a wide range of leisure activities. Near-natural wooded areas, open meadows and landscaped gardens with roses, ornamental shrubs, perennials and summer flowers offer a variety of impressions for walkers. Fitness trails and a Finnish track invite you to exercise. Children can have fun in the playground and enjoy the animals in the enclosure. Goats and sheep can be stroked here. You can see the park from a different perspective in a rented boat on the boating lake. Barbecue areas are also available for a cozy picnic with friends and family. A number of sculptures have been installed in the Bismarckstraße entrance area. Several sports facilities such as tennis courts, athletics facilities and a roller-skating rink offer further leisure opportunities. Various open-air events take place here in the summer months.

Thiele's garden is a special feature of local history, an art garden that arose from the individual longings of a trio of artists to create their dream of combining landscape, art and nature in the rough and tumble of Bremerhaven. With its old trees, numerous sculptures, exotic plants, botanical tour and cultural program, the 19,000 square meter park is definitely worth a visit.

Bremerhaven's fishing port has been home to an approx. 1,400-hectare nature reserve since March 14, 2015. The port company bremenports has been developing this area since 2010 as an ecological compensation area for major port construction projects such as Container Terminal 4. The Luneplate, as the nature reserve is called, consists of marsh grassland, mudflats and a tidal polder. The artificially created flooding area is lower than the Weser flood level and is flooded twice a day.
Visitors have the opportunity to discover the wildlife via circular paths and observation facilities. There is an observation tower in the south of the Luneplate and an observation hide from which you can get close to the birds without being spotted. There are also two visitor platforms at the former Lunesiel and one with a view of the wet grassland and two information pavilions at the parking lots.
The area can only be explored on foot or by bike. Immerse yourself in this unique natural landscape and enjoy undisturbed moments in the Luneplate nature reserve!
